30 Hour Famine 2010 Follow-Up

We Did It!!! We Were Hungry

Thanks to the prayerful and financial support of our congregation, we completed our 30 Hour Famine! It wasn’t easy…but we had a fantastic time. Our weekend consisted of five main service projects.

First, we volunteered for the Miracle Hill Boy’s Shelter, where our students played basketball and football with boys from the shelter for more than 3 hours. We spent the night at Lookup Lodge in cardboard boxes, where we had a great candlelight memorial for the 25,000 children under the age of 5 who die every day worldwide because of hunger. It was a very moving time for all of us.

We were supposed to volunteer at Paris Mountain State Park first thing Saturday morning, but the event was rained out. Instead we spent a few hours doing various team building activities which became more and more trying as the student’s hunger increased. From there, we did a bridge project at the Greer Miracle Hill Thrift Store where we sorted through clothes, books, and toys and put them on the shelves.

We then did some hard manual labor in the pouring rain at a single mom’s house from our church, cutting grass and clearing scrub trees from her property. From there, we also worked in the rain at Ruby Beck’s home, a woman we have helped in every year’s famine project so far; trimming grass, mulching her flower beds, planting flowers, scrubbing her bathroom, and washing her windows. At her request we erected a cross last year on her porch to remind her of Jesus’ suffering every time she feels physical pain. It is still standing.

We met under an elementary school overhang and discussed what it felt like to be wet, cold and hungry. This may have been the moment where many of them really began to understand what people right here in the Blue Ridge region are feeling every day.

Finally, we returned to eat our warrior break-fast meal together. As a final twist, RidgeStudents were given shopping bags rather than plates to eat a “manwich” meal provided by Gerri Jefferson. We had seen many people do this at the Soup Kitchen when we served there in Greer previous years. This is an experience they will not forget. Thank you for your support!

We raised $770.00 in funds which will go directly to Haiti to care for 1 child for over 2 entire years! Because of RidgeStudents, their life will be forever changed. That’s a pretty incredible accomplishment on these student’s behalf.
